Utah's Strong Volkswagen to Host New World Record Holding Driver of Panamericana Highway

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 02, 2011 - On July 13, after 11 days, 17 hours and 22 minutes of non-stop driving, renowned adventurer and off-road driver Rainer Zietlow and his team set a new world record certified by Tüv Nord Mobility for driving the length of the Pan-American Highway as they crossed the road's end in Deadhorse, Alaska. The TDI-Panamericana Endurance Challenge team covered 14 countries and nearly 16,000 miles in a 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI® Clean Diesel SUV. "Our adrenaline is still pumping after setting the new world record on the Pan-American Highway," said Rainer Zietlow, manager of the German car event agency, Challenge4 GmbH, after finishing the Challenge. "We were able to overcome every w goverment technology eather challenge along the way, and our fueling and transportation stops ran like clockwork. Thanks to our sponsors, we were outfitted with a vehicle that could handle the demanding driving schedule and challenging conditions, and had amazing technical and driver support along the way."

Zietlow and his German teammates, Carlos Fernandez and Marius Biela, started their journey on July 2 at the southern-most tip of Argentina where the Pan-American Highway begins. They traveled through 14 countries – Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States and Canada – and through challenging conditions ranging from a blinding sandstorm in Chile to muddy roads in northern Alaska. The team drove day and night, taking five-hour driving shifts throughout the trip. The TDI-Panamericana Endurance Challenge website, www.tdi-panamericana.com, shared the team's experiences through blog posts and videos and tracked their progress using a live map.

This world record journey was also one of goodwill. Zietlow will donate 10 Euro cents for each kilometer that was driven this trip to two villages 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 in Latin America managed by Plan International, a charity organization that works in 48 developing countries to promote children's rights and lift millions of children out of poverty.

Subaru plant celebrates 2 millionth car milestone

PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 01, 2011 – Color was king Friday afternoon at a staging area outside the Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. plant in Lafayette.

While associates munched on red, white and blue frozen ice treats, a ruby red 2011 four-door Outback emerged from gray smoke that billowed around door S23 -- the 2 millionth Subaru vehicle produced at SIA.

"It took us 13 years to build the first million Subarus. And at our current rate of production, it should be less than seven years to build our next million Subarus," said Tom Easterday, SIA executive vice president, before the brand new Outback w Infiniti m hybird as showered with sparkling mineral water as associates cheered the car's arrival. "Well over half of all Subarus sold in the U.S. in the past two years were built right here."

Along with the SIA-made Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models, Subaru also sells Forester and Impreza models that are built in Japan.

Through the first six months of this year, Outback sales totaled 51,239. That's a 25 percent gain over the same period in 2010. Sales of the Legacy are up 12 percent during the same period, to 21,284 units. July sales report android application s are to be released Tuesday.

Dave Sullivan, director of industry analysis with AutoPacific Inc., an automotive marketing research and product consulting firm in Troy, Mich., said Subaru's success can be traced to its philosophy of remaining true to its brand and not trying to do anything outrageous.

"Subaru has long been a niche vehicle for a lot of consumers, and lately they've been experiencing some tremendous growth. It's kind of like people look at Subaru as being capable and efficient," Sullivan said.

"They have a lot of character and really stuck with all-wheel drive and versatility. Subaru is great for people looking to have a positive impact on the environment."

The 2 millionth Outback that was celebrated with cheers from associates Friday was driven by Bill Erdes, one of three employees in the car who have worked at the plant since 1988, before production started.

"It was a nice honor. I'm one of the oldest and most senior people," said Erdes, a supplier quality associate.

"I can remember watching the first Job 1 (Subaru) come off the assembly line. Two million seemed like such a long way off, but it's here. It's a great thing for Subaru and SIA. They have a great car, and people are buying it."

That first car, a 1990 Legacy that was produced Sept. 11, 1989, sat alongside the 2 millionth Outback during the ceremony.

"Over the course of these past 22 years, a total of nearly 3,430,000 vehicles were assembled at SIA, including 2 million Subarus," said Motokiyo Nomura, the company's president and chief executive officer.

"We could not have achieved this success without our teamwork. We need to keep reminding ourselves of safety first."

In the raising chickens past, the SIA plant has turned automobile news out Isuzu pickups, Rodeos, Amigos and Axioms, as well as the Honda Passport and Subaru Baja.

Along with the current Subaru vehicles, SIA also is under contract to produce the Camry for Toyota.

Outback and Legacy models are shipped from Lafayette to more than 50 countries.
